چکیده

We introduce a new image cytometer design for detection of very small particulate and demonstrate its capability in water analysis. The device is a compact microscope composed of off-the-shelf components, such as a light emitting diode (LED) source, a complementary metal– oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor, and a specific combination of optical lenses that allow, through an appropriate software, Fourier transform processing of the sample volume. Waterborne microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Legionella pneumophila (L. pneumophila) and Phytoplankton, are detected by interrogating the volume sample either in a fluorescent or label-free mode, i.e. with or without fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) molecules attached to the micro-organisms, respectively. We achieve a sensitivity of 50 CFU/ml, which can be further increased to 0.2 CFU/ml by pre-concentrating an initial sample volume of 500 ml with an ad-hoc fluidic system. We also prove the capability of the proposed image cytometer of differentiating microbiological populations by size with a resolution of 3 μm and of operating in real contaminated water.

Assessment of the Wavelet Transform for Noise Reduction in Simulated PET Images

Introduction: An efficient method of tomographic imaging in nuclear medicine is positron emission tomography (PET). Compared to SPECT, PET has the advantages of higher levels of sensitivity, spatial resolution and more accurate quantification. However, high noise levels in the image limit its diagnostic utility. Noise removal in nuclear medicine is traditionally based on Fourier decomposition o...

The Combinational Use Of Knowledge-Based Methods and Morphological Image Processing in Color Image Face Detection

The human facial recognition is the base for all facial processing systems. In this work a basicmethod is presented for the reduction of detection time in fixed image with different color levels. The proposed method is the simplest approach in face spatial localization, since it doesn’trequire the dynamics of images and information of the color of skin in image background. Inaddition, to do face...

Accurate Fruits Fault Detection in Agricultural Goods using an Efficient Algorithm

The main purpose of this paper was to introduce an efficient algorithm for fault identification in fruits images. First, input image was de-noised using the combination of Block Matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) and Principle Component Analysis (PCA) model. Afterward, in order to reduce the size of images and increase the execution speed, refined Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) algorithm was uti...

A New Method for Detecting Sperms in Microscopy Images: Combination of Zernike Moments and Spatial Processing

Introduction: In recent years, modern microscopic imaging in parallel with digital image processing techniques, have facilitated computerized semen analysis. However, in these methods, distinguishing sperms from other semen particles can be hampered by low contrast of microscopic images and the possibility of neighboring sperms touching each other. Materials and Methods: This article introduced...

Land Cover Subpixel Change Detection using Hyperspectral Images Based on Spectral Unmixing and Post-processing

The earth is continually being influenced by some actions such as flood, tornado and human artificial activities. This process causes the changes in land cover type. Thus, for optimal management of the use of resources, it is necessary to be aware of these changes. Today’s remote sensing plays key role in geology and environmental monitoring by its high resolution, wide covering and low cost...
